Your rain drainage problem sounds... well... wet and icky. I know how you feel to a certain extent, because I live in my mother's basement. Which is actually a bedroom my step-father built for me, but our basement tends to flood. Like, serious amounts. Or used to. I can't tell you how angry I was to find out that most of my belongings that are packed away from when I moved back home were soaked and needed to be thrown away. Including the gown my mother bought for me for my 16th birthday, and the dress my grandmother gave to me that was custom made for her when she was 19 from Hong Kong. GRR. So angry.
